What is the BMI chart?

Adult reference chart from the World Health Organization
  1. Under 18.5Underweight
  2. 18.5 to 24.9Healthy weight range
  3. 25 to 29.9Overweight
  4. 30 and overObesity

BMI, short for body mass index, is found by taking the kilogram weight and dividing it by the height in metres multiplied by itself.

Example. For a height of 1.65 m and a weight of 72, the BMI equals 72 divided by 1.65 squared, which gives 26.4.

The drawbacks. BMI cannot tell muscle apart from fat. It gets things wrong for athletes, for people past 65 and in pregnancy.
