30kg goal, why the first 5 and 10 percent of your weight already make a difference
Key points

On a 30kg goal, your first real milestones are 5 percent and then 10 percent of your starting weight, because the NHS notes that losing even that much can improve your health. 30kg is about 4 stone 10lb. Looking only at the final number can feel overwhelming. Breaking it into these first marks makes the goal feel within reach and gives you something to celebrate early.

Raise it during a free assessment

A coach from the club reviews your circumstances alongside you and suggests the right next steps.

Working out your own marks

Take your starting weight and multiply it by 0.05 for the first mark, and by 0.10 for the second.

  • At 110kg, 5 percent is 5.5kg and 10 percent is 11kg.
  • At 125kg, 5 percent is about 6kg and 10 percent is 12.5kg.
  • At 140kg, 5 percent is 7kg and 10 percent is 14kg.

Write your 2 numbers somewhere you will see them every morning.

What the NHS says about these marks

The NHS page on overweight and obesity explains that losing a small amount of weight, 5 to 10 percent of your body weight, can improve your health. It also advises seeing a GP if you want help to lose weight, so that is a good first step before a goal this size.

Your waist tells part of the story

Alongside your weight, track your waist. The NHS suggests keeping your waist to less than half your height, and its waist to height ratio calculator shows where you stand. Measure once a month, just above your belly button, after breathing out normally.

Celebrating without food

Reaching 5 percent deserves a reward. Choose one that supports the next stage.

  • New walking shoes for longer routes.
  • A day out at Bicester Heritage or a trip to the coast.
  • A piece of clothing in your new size.
  • An hour just for you, with a book or a long bath.

Health benefits you may notice first

Long before the final number, the first marks can bring changes you feel. Many people find stairs easier, sleep more soundly and have more energy through the day. Your GP may also see changes in measures such as blood pressure at your next check. Note these down beside your weight, because they are often the best reason to keep going when the scales slow.

After 10 percent

Once you pass 10 percent, set the next mark as another 5 percent of your new weight. The pace may slow, and that is normal as your body becomes lighter. Our page on breaking a plateau helps when it does, and why muscle matters explains how to protect your strength along the way.

Support every step of the way

Your weight loss curve

Add your profile and the curve is redrawn at once.

You are
Ideal, 0.5 to 1 kg a week Too fast, muscle loss Median curve Journey, plateaus and regains

Losing 8 kg at the median pace would take roughly 11 weeks, or around 4 months at the gentlest one.

Most guidance puts lasting weight loss at 500 g to 1 kg per week, which is the ideal zone on the chart. Lose more than 1 kg per week consistently and the body eats into muscle and not just fat, shown by the hatched zone.

This projection is a rough guide only. Each person’s journey is their own, and results are not the same for everyone. The sums are done on your device, with nothing stored or sent anywhere. Over 65, speak to your doctor before anything else.

How this curve is calculated

At the top, the zone’s edge marks 500 g per week, the gentlest rate. At the bottom, its edge marks 1 kg per week, the point where risk starts.

Weight comes off faster in the first weeks, much of it water, before the pace eases. Beyond 40, the median curve gradually flattens as metabolism slows down. With the same effort, men generally lose a little faster than women.

Like real life, the journey curve includes plateaus a few days long and minor regains. It is no prediction of the path you will follow.
